There are a lot of issues involved with Data Migration, a phrase that trips easily off the tongue and just as easily ends up in a trip to the doggy-doo farm. Migration needs as much consideration and planning as the implementation of any new system and, ideally, should be planned in parallel with it. Some of the issues are:-

  • Concerns over control; both physical and managerial.
  • Mapping - the process of allocating data from old systems into new systems, field by field.
  • Extraction; The ability to access the old data.
  • The ability and authority to cleanse and filter the data.
  • The processing of disparate data types into the requisite types.
  • Management and provision of the testing and control feedback.
  • The creation of Audit controls to reconcile record counts as data is processed from old to new system.
  • Documentation and communication
